Why is this drug prescribed?

Feldene capsules, Feldene melt tablets and Feldene injection all contain the active ingredient piroxicam, which is a type of drug called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs are used to relieve pain and inflammation. Piroxicam is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic drug. Piroxicam works by blocking the action of a substance in the body called cyclo-oxygenase. Cyclo-oxygenase is involved in the production of various chemicals in the body, some of which are known as prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are produced by the body in response to injury and certain diseases and conditions, and cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Piroxicam blocks the production of these prostaglandins and is therefore effective at reducing inflammation and pain. Piroxicam can be used to relieve pain and inflammation in a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including various forms of arthritis. However, due to the risk of side effects on the gut and skin rashes associated with the drug it should not be the first NSAID that is prescribed to relieve these conditions. In addition it is no longer recommended for the short-term relief of pain and inflammation in conditions such as acute gout, muscle sprains and strains or following surgery. Piroxicam has a prolonged duration of action which means that one dose can provide pain relief throughout the day. You should try and take your dose at the same time each day. Feldene capsules should be swallowed with a drink. Feldene melt tablets are designed to dissolve quickly on the tongue and be swallowed with your saliva. These are convenient to take if you don't have a drink handy. They can also be swallowed whole with a drink. Both dose forms should preferably be taken with food to help reduce irritation to the stomach. Feldene injection may be given for the initial relief of pain, but you will be switched onto oral treatment as soon as possible. The injection is given into the muscle of the buttock.

What side effects can this drug cause?

* Disturbances of the gut such as indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain. * Loss of appetite. * Excess gas in the stomach and intestines. * Skin reactions such as rash or itching. * Abnormal reaction of the skin to light, usually a rash. * Ulceration of the stomach or intestines. * Bleeding from the stomach or intestines. * Retention of water in the body tissues, resulting in swelling. * Dizziness. * Headache. * Sleepiness. * Difficulty sleeping. * Depression. * Confusion. * Balance disorders involving the inner ear * Sensation of ringing or other noise in the ears * Blurred vision. * Allergic reactions such as severe skin rashes, swelling of the lips, tongue and throat or narrowing of the airways. * Kidney, liver or blood disorders.
